It seems that mobile banking is here to stay, with the number of online users quadrupling from 4% in 2006 to 16% at end of 2010 according to a recent Forrester report. So if the growth and market opportunity are there, why aren’t financial institutions more heavily invested in this going forward? It’s clear that the advent of smart phones and tablets has catapulted mobile banking usage scenarios, especially with an aging millennial generation accustom to doing everything from their phone. If financial institutions want to stay ahead of consumer demands tied to this channel, they need to offer more than just account balance information. Until it is treated like a standalone channel, mobile banking will only serve the day-to-day needs of those consumers already using other electronic channels. Institutions only need to look at the Africa mobile banking market – estimated to hit $22 billion by 2015 -- to see the potential ROI it can provide."
